TRANSMISSION (MAP 2019)

ABOUT THE GRANT

ABOUT THE PROJECT

TRANSMISSION is an 80-minute site adaptive performance by the Propelled Animals, a collaborative ensemble of dancers, visual and performance artists, musicians and scholars. This interdisciplinary work spans the kinesthetic, visual and aural to address systemic oppression. The Propelled Animals resist heteropatriarchal ethos of America by creating site adaptive work that encourages community and offers resilience in the face of individual and collective traumas inflicted by systemic social, cultural, and political injustice.

TRANSMISSION will be developed and debuted in residence at the Kelly Strayhorn Theatre in Pittsburgh, PA. The piece is highly influenced by national and global events affecting each of the cast members; including honoring those impacted by the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting and the murder of Antwon Rose II in 2018. The piece will also be in conversation with environmentalists and Water Protectors to learn more about how the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers has impacted Pittsburgh(ers) – water bringing people together for centuries. A reminder of the intersection and connection to all living things, past, present, and future, at its center, TRANSMISSION is about people, space, place, and art as social action and ritual as performance.
