ABOUT THE GRANT

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The third part in a trilogy created by playwright Larissa FastHorse with Cornerstone Theater Company and director Michael John Garcés, The Lakota Project is a community generated and performed immersive theatrical experience created through radical engagement with the Lakota communities of South Dakota. This cycle of works synthesizes the practices of conventional theater, contemporary engagement and Indigenous art making in experiences that are immersive, not for effect, but to create art that is of and for the community, that critiques and dismantles power structures while creating a sense of human collective, that is inclusive and embraces diversity, and that gives primacy to Indigenous voices. It combines long-term service to community with the Cornerstone methodology of creating theater through a Native lens to make work that is truly Indigenous and artistically unique. The Lakota Project blends culture, theater and community.
