ABOUT THE PROJECT
A look into Shontina Vernon’s extraordinary life, Forging Ahead charts her personal upheavals and music’s role in granting solace, escape, and community. While it’s forgery that lands this protagonist in juvie, it is her bold self reinventions post incarceration that prove the most impressive forging of all. Shontina’s work sits at the intersection of music, art, and activism. In 2016, she was awarded the Rauschenberg “Artist as Activist” Fellowship. The show is a collaboration with Flying Carpet Theatre.
