For C.J. (MAP 2019)

ABOUT THE GRANT

ABOUT THE PROJECT

For C.J. is a new multimedia dance ensemble piece investigating the asthma-related issues people of color from the inner cities face. It seeks to create awareness of such problems and provide tools to combat them, as well as honor the life of Davalois Fearon’s nephew, a young man who fell victim to an avoidable fatal asthma attack. It will use themes of nature to explore themes of loss and remembrance to celebrate C.J.’s life and tells his story through Fearon’s fluid yet assertive movement vocabulary, with original music by multi-reedist Mike McGinnis, wearable sculpture, costume, and makeup designed by interdisciplinary artist Jasmine Murrell, and set design by performer and visual artist Myssi Robinson. For C.J. will incorporate aspects of As Above, As Below, a site-specific piece commissioned by the Bronx Museum as part of the BxMA Co-Lab dance series, created in dialogue with Gordon Matta-Clark’s exhibition Anarchitect.
