ABOUT THE GRANT
- $32,250 to New York Foundation for the Arts to support Deconstructed Anthem #3 (MAP 2019)
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Deconstructed Anthems (DA), is an ongoing series of jazz compositions, performances and sound-reactive installations in which The Star-Spangled Banner is repeated multiple times, each time manipulating and moving notes at the rate of mass incarceration, and ending in silence. DA 1 premiered December 2017 in Houston at Day for Night Festival as six 30-minute jazz trio performances inside a sound-reactive light installation. The jazz trio included award-winning musicians: Kris Bowers, Ambrose Akinmusire and Burniss Earl Travis. DA 2 premiered April 2018 in D.C. at the Kennedy Center Arts Summit as a 10-minute jazz trio performance on a stage. The jazz trio included Amy Bormet, Victor Haskins, and Andrew Randazzo who are alumni of The Kennedy Center’s Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency. DA 3 will be a jazz piano duet between a human pianist and computer-controlled self-playing piano. As the pianist repeats The Star-Spangled Banner for 30-45 minutes, the piano will react to each played note by playing and holding down keys, ending in silence/with all keys being held down.
