ABOUT THE GRANT
- $13,200 to Culture Push to support Dances for Solidarity (MAP 2019)
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Dances for Solidarity, a movement-based project facilitated by choreographer Sarah Dahnke, primarily collaborates with people who are incarcerated in solitary confinement, co-creating choreography that can be performed by groups of system-affected people on the outside. This project has existed in some form since early 2015, beginning as an exchange of written correspondence that resulted in deep relationships with several incarcerated people who later engaged in a process of co-creating choreography through letters. With support from The Map Fund, Dahnke will bring Dances for Solidarity back to New Orleans, where the project was in residence in 2017. Dances for Solidarity will build a series of community-based performances that add female and transgender voices to the project, which is already in collaboration with several incarcerated men.
