2024 Micrograntees

“Receiving this surprise microgrant is more than just the money. To be nominated by peers I look up to and the support from MAP Fund, an organization I’ve been following for years, has shifted my relationship to my work. This microgrant has given me the hope that I can continue to dream big and that I have support from artists and organizations and I don’t have to do it alone. Thank you for believing in me and my work and this opportunity to continue to follow the dream.”

MAP Fund—one of the longest-running, private funding sources for performing arts—is excited to announce the recipients of their Microgrants Program, through which all 2024 MAP grantees were invited to share an additional $1,000 stipend with an artist in their community. The Microgrants program amplifies the reach of MAP resources by expanding opportunities for innovative and under-funded artists to resource their communities.

The microgrants are unrestricted and have no reporting requirement: recipients are free to use the funds as they choose. The mechanism for distribution involves the MAP grantee naming another artist along with saying a bit about why they elected that person. Nominations can be anonymous, but most grantees decide to let their micrograntee know who nominated them. When asked why they selected their microgrant nominees, grantees expressed a deep admiration for these artists. “She is someone that I have looked up to as an artist, scholar, and organizer for almost ten years now,” one grantee wrote. “I feel inspired by their abundance of creativity, hard work, dedication, and connection to their ancestry,” shared another.

This cohort of micrograntees stretches across 23 states and includes actors, dancers, musicians, educators, students, directors, cultural workers and culture bearers, playwrights, activists, choreographers, poets, a sound designer, a DJ, and more. Grantees praised the “dynamic range of talent,” “kind and collaborative work ethic,” and “unique and original work” of these micrograntees, calling them “stellar,” “incredible,” and “tremendous.”

Grantees stressed the importance of their micrograntee’s work, whether it was “making invaluable contributions to the Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) theatre community,” “decolonizing and enacting resistance through the power of dance,” or “moving through worlds and stories that hold black queer communities, relentless care and fierce rage, and lasting resistance.” Many grantees highlighted their micrograntee’s contributions to their community. “Behind the scenes, they are an anchor in our community,” one grantee said, “I want them to receive their flowers in real time.”
