Yesterday Tomorrow, created by Annie Dorsen, is a new kind of musical – a collaboration between human artists and evolutionary algorithms. In this work, three live singers blend with computer voices, all controlled by algorithms, to create an environmental concert of song, machine, gestures, light and space. Yesterday Tomorrow uses a kind of artificial intelligence known as evolutionary computation to give a unique experience of the complexity and unpredictability of the present tense, contrasted with the known past and the imagined future. This new project continues Ms. Dorsen’s development of algorithmic theater, computer creativity and real-time transformations.
