$23,000 to support SCAT! (MAP 2016)
$5,180 to general operating support for Urban Bush Women

About the Project

A new evening-length work placed in a fictional Kansas City jazz club that will explore creating a site responsive piece that provides the audience with an immersive and participatory experience. Scat singing and vocalizations will support the physical, musical and verbal storytelling with live vocals and a small band. SCAT! is an expansion of Hep Hep Sweet Sweet, a work that UBW Founder/Visioning Partner, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Dramaturg, Talvin Wilks, collaborated on in 2014 - 2015. This new work will be designed to be performed and sustained long-term in a club setting. Zollar’s family migration story, Isabel Wilkerson's "The Warmth of Other Suns" and Zollar’s research regarding the Great Migration, along with the other works in UBW’s migration series, serve as inspiration for SCAT!
