About the Project

ELIJAH GREEN is a new theatrical work by writer, director, designer Andrew Ondrejcak that follows the journey of a divine spirit as it wanders on earth. The episodic drama is loosely based on Strindberg’s 'A Dream Play' with a set inspired by Peter Brueghel's genre paintings. The multidisciplinary team includes choreographer John Jasperse, composer Shara Worden, sound artist Kristin Worrall, and performers Helga Davis, Eleanor Hullihan, Yuki Kawahisa, Tanya Selvaratnam, Edgar Oliver, and Stuart Singer.

ELIJAH GREEN is told in seven parts with a prologue, each following the “spirit” as it experiences life through a series of nameless characters. The seventh and final character is the actual 11-year-old Elijah Green who, after witnessing the struggles inherent to living on earth, reports back to the heavens that humans are to be pitied.

The scenes are decidedly common: a man drinks continuously alone at a bar while a child experiences fear of the dark; a woman combs her hair while a teenage boy tries to stop smoking. Individually, they look to the impulses within--and to the vast unknown above--in the search for something, anything, to hold onto. As a supplement to the performance, the audience will receive an original novella as they exit the theater.
