$28,000 to support Decameron Carnival Cruise (MAP 2014)
$5,000 to general operating support for Theater Oobleck

About the Project

Theater Oobleck joins forces with El Circo Nacional de Puerto Rico to create a bi-lingual, circus-arts version of Giovanni Boccaccio's 14th century work "The Decameron" as performed as a cabaret on a doomed cruise ship (reminiscent of the cruise ships that are a ubiquitous presence in San Juan's ports).

The work, which will premiere in San Juan and Chicago in the Spring of 2015, will address the economic plague afflicting the island of Puerto Rico, and the themes of emigration, exodus, and home.

Oobleck has been creating original, low-cost, ensemble-made theater in Chicago for 26 years. El Circo was founded in 2010 and takes a distinctly populist approach to performance, regularly appearing at festivals, schools, and on the streets of Puerto Rico.
