About the Project
This will be a show about guns.
The four members of So Percussion in collaboration with choreographer Emily Johnson and director Ain Gordon are constructing a new work about our mixed relationship to guns: our knee-jerk aversion to, our growing urban-centered estrangement from, our recoil from what could be called simply an object (were it not for its daunting power). Two of us have held guns, the rest approach in ignorance.
The December 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School took place five days before our last project opened in our hometown of Brooklyn, NY. Watching the news reports each day before getting on stage to perform deeply colored our experience of what that piece meant. In this society, what is our role as those whose work happens after everyone sits and the lights go out? Are we too safe there? The raw emotions of continuing mass shootings make this topic too difficult to not explore.
Now, we must all seek first hand experience. We will go through background checks; go to shooting ranges; interview those whose lives are intertwined with guns - hunters, sportsman, law enforcement officers. We will research the history of American gun manufacture (Colt, Bushmaster, Smith & Wesson) and the impetus for the “right to bear arms.” Given our group’s like-minded stance on increased gun control and thorough government policing of any weaponry made available to the general public, we will seek out those who most eloquently defend opposing views – we must see the other side.
