About the Grant

$30,000 to support Sarah Michelson's Gold, Parts 1-3 (MAP 2004), a work that investigates urban geography and orchestrates displacement.

About the Project

Conceived as a movement-based, interdisciplinary, ‘environmental’ work for four company dancers plus local performers selected by audition, Sarah Michelson’s new project continues the artist’s investigation into the complex rules of landscape and architecture, undertaken in her recent work, Shadowmann.

A quartet, in which no single movement repeats, the project is built specifically for and in collaboration with each presenting venue, and reconfigures using information gleaned from each site. Influenced by Herzog and de Meuron’s architectural design for the new Walker Art Center, which will open its 05-06 season with the work, the project analyzes and divides the space into attractive environs for "art" to happen.

With this project, Michelson, continues her on-going collaboration with Mike Iveson, Parker Lutz, and Greg Zuccolo.
