About the Project

Islands of Milwaukee is a devised project created by Sojourn Theatre and Anne Basting during a multi-year process of research and engagement with homebound seniors. This cross-disciplinary project will use media and visual art installation practices alongside performance interventions, culminating in a series of devised performances that engage an entire city stymied by decades of structural segregation. Forged through partnerships across the city's many divides, Islands uses the power of metaphor to jumpstart conversations about cross-community connectedness and envision a more connected future for homebound seniors through public transit, public health policy and arts-based civic practice.

Partnerships with Interfaith’s Neighborhood Outreach and Telephone Reassurance Programs, and with the Milwaukee County Department on Aging’s Home Delivered Meal program invite Milwaukee’s isolated elders to create stories and images that inspire regional conversations and action. Students with UWM’s Peck School of the Arts are collaborating as facilitators of creative discussions with elders, and performing in the public events. Rigorous evaluation and documentation are aimed at creating a model of value to cities facing similar challenges.
