About the Grant

$32,000 to support Not What Happened (MAP 2012), a new play by writer/director Ain Gordon.

About the Project

Writer and director Ain Gordon’s Not What Happened is a contrapuntal duet for two people who don’t meet: the historical re-enactor and the woman she re-enacts. The re-enactor unspools her official story, along with her twenty-year devotion to a figure she pretends to be but isn’t. Her doppelganger, dressed identically, is the actual soul amid her silent life two centuries earlier.

For both women, it’s baking day; and perhaps something happens. Framing the character’s mutual toil are projections of farming ruins and empty landscapes by rural documentary artist Forrest Holzapfel. Not What Happened is a Pick Up Performance Co(s) production in collaboration with Marlboro College; Vermont Performance Lab; and the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, with development support from MASS MoCA; the Playwright’s Center; and Baryshnikov Arts Center.
