About the Project

ALL THE NEWS FROM CHINA SINCE 1911! SECRET INTERVIEWS WITH MY MOTHER! BAD TRANSLATIONS! FRESH DUMPLINGS!

motherland/foreign relations (we all here why you never call?) is a new work created and performed by Meiyin Wang and directed by Eric Ting. motherland/foreign relations is a performance for two people and a rotating panel of guests that examines the history of modern China through the subversively interrogating a mother about her mundane past—ultimately asking, “What is the appropriate unit of mapping human history?”

Part lecture, part interview, and part cooking show, motherland/foreign relations examines three potential units: the recorded, the oral, the ritual, and utilizing the distilled objectivity of the newspaper headline; the communication of personal narrative through electronic translation; and the perpetuation of cultural history through food.
