About the Grant

$30,000 to support Tree City Legends (MAP 2011), written by writer and musician Dennis Kim, directed by Marc Bamuthi Joseph and collaborative director and performer Sean San Jose, with visual design by Joan Osato, and performances by emerging members of The Living Word Project and Campo Santo ensembles.

About the Project

The Living Word Project—the theater repertory company of Youth Speaks, and Campo Santo—the resident theatre company of Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco, California, are developing a play entitled Tree City Legends. Tree City is an evening-length musical theater work chronicling the life of a Korean-American family. It focuses on the lives of the Kane brothers—Junie, Sum, Denizen, and Min—and how they respond to the loss of their parents while living in the cracks of a modern metropolis. The legends of the story are at once flesh and fiction, men and make-believe. Their story is a remembering, a reworking of myth. Their song is a dub, a version; the sound the dead make, mourning themselves.

Tree City
is slated for its world premiere through Intersection for the Arts in November 2011.
