About the Grant

$35,000 to support Canyon (MAP 2011), a new work created by John Jasperse in collaboration with the performers Lindsay Clark, Erin Cornell, Kennis Hawkins, Burr Johnson, and James McGinn. Music by Hahn Rowe, visuals by Tony Orrico, and lighting by James Clotfelter.

About the Project

“Waking up begins with saying am and now. That which has awoken then lies for a while staring up at the ceiling and down into itself until it has recognized I, and therefrom deduced I am, I am now.” ¬–Christopher Isherwood

“What is your original face?” ¬–t¬he Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng

Canyon focuses on the transformative power of loosing oneself in visceral experience, where the supremacy of intellect is humbled—through experience—into a state of wonder. Generative ideas include engineered confusion, alternating sensory overload and spaciousness, fractured connectivity, and rapture.

is a co-commission of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Philadelphia Live Arts, and the Wexner Center for the Arts. The production will be developed in-residency at the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography in Tallahassee, Florida, in June 2011; at MASS MoCa in North Adams, Massachusetts, in August 2011; and at CPR—The Center for Performance Research in New York, New York.
