About the Grant

$25,000 to support Minister of Mascots (MAP 2011), a new work by Pig Iron Theatre Company in collaboration with Japanese playwright, choreographer, and director Toshiki Okada.

About the Project

Zero Cost House will be Okada’s first English-language creation and will spring from a number of sources: Japanese and American ideas about space, seclusion, and happiness; the minutiae of everyday life; Henry David Thoreau’s Walden; and Kyohei Sakaguchi’s ruminations on homelessness.

Preliminary investigations into Zero Cost House will begin at Playmakers Repertory Company in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where Pig Iron Theatre Company has been offered a creative residency. Development on the piece will continue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Zero Cost House will be directed by Pig Iron co-artistic director Dan Rothenberg, who recently directed the English-language premiere of Okada’s play Enjoy in New York, New York. Zero Cost House will premiere in Fall 2012 at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
