About the Grant

$25,000 to support Circus Amok Parks Tour (MAP 2011), a circus/theater production by Circus Amok in the public parks of New York City in September 2012.

About the Project

Circus Amok’s 2012 Parks Tour will address contemporary issues of social justice relevant to the everyday lives of New Yorkers, animating conversation and placing innovative live theater at the heart of social life. As we do each year, we will explore and stretch the boundaries of our evolving circus theater form to make a thrilling, chilling, glamorous, insightful, and inspiring spectacular for our ethnically and economically diverse audiences. As always, the Parks Tour production will be a show in which balancing acts, bank foreclosures, bhangra tunes, and Buckminster Fuller can share a stage—a show in which high art and low art are both art, and queerness is a fact of life.

The 2012 Parks Tour
production will be headed by artistic director and ringmaster Jennifer Miller and musical director Jenny Romaine. It will feature Circus Amok’s company of ring performers and the Circus Amok Band—artists equally at ease with slapstick, Shakespeare, and postmodern dance as with Balkan brass, hip-hop hooks, and punk-rock riffs. Each performance will be preceded by a procession through the surrounding area and followed by informal acrobatics workshops in the ring.
