About the Grant

$25,000 to support the research and development of The Oscar Grant Project (MAP 2010), a new play by Marcus Gardley and Melanie Joseph.

About the Project

The Foundry Theatre has commissioned playwright Marcus Gardley to co-create a new work with dramaturg/director, Melanie Joseph that investigates the complex issue of racial profiling. It will be loosely based on the fatal police shooting an of African American man named Oscar Grant on a train platform on New Year's Eve of 2009. The shooting occurred while Grant was restrained -- prostrate and unarmed -- in front of several other passengers. The event was captured on multiple digital and cell phone cameras and the footage was posted to the Internet where it was watched hundreds of thousands of times by viewers across the world. Gardley and Joseph are interested in how the internet images of the shooting operate alongside the proliferation of exported U.S. security practices, to create perceptions and practices of racial profiling.
