$18,000 to support Niicugni (Listen) (MAP 2010), created and performed by Emily Johnson, with sound composed and performed by multi-instrumentalist James Everest and violinist/electronic musician Bethany Lacktorin.
About the Project
*I want to be on the land my ancestors dug into, pulled from, rose up from - and fell into. I want to be on this land, listening, and I also want to let the land be.*
A new performance centered on movement, story, and sound, housed within a light/sound installation of functional fish-skin sculptures. Provoked by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and inspired by mountains, Niicugni equates the land we live on with the cells that comprise our bodies and calls upon audiences to remember that land, like our bodies, is alive with ancestry, memory, and possibility.
