About the Grant

$35,000 to support The Penelope Project (MAP 2010), a multi-year theatre/community-engagement collaboration.

About the Project

Based on the Penelope myth in Homer's Odyssey, The Penelope Project partners Sojourn Theatre, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Center on Age & Community and Luther Manor, a Milwaukee nursing home to develop an original site-specific play professionally produced at the nursing home in spring 2011. Sojourn and team will use artist-led engagement strategies such as interviews, discussion, and workshops with Luther Manor residents, their families, and nursing home staff to jointly investigate the Penelope story and its meaning in this contemporary setting. Sojourn artist Maureen Towey will direct, with Sojourn actors, UWM and senior center residents as performers; the playwright is Anne Basting, Director of the Center on Age & Community. Sojourn Theatre’s Founding Artistic Director Michael Rohd will collaborate and help oversee the project.
