About the Grant

$35,000 to support Soul Leaves Her Body (MAP 2010), by Peter Flaherty, Jennie MaryTai Liu and Peter Ksander.

About the Project

Soul Leaves Her Body is an integrated-media performance synthesizing theater, dance, cinema, live video, music, and foley sound. Inspired by a thirteenth-century Chinese love story about a young woman who rips her soul from her body, this original, contemporary work explores the soul-body relationship in today's networked, electronic culture. Our team of interdisciplinary artists create a multi-channel film live on stage. As the young lovers' path crosses with a group of Chinese boat-dwellers, lush cinematic visuals appear on screens of glass and sails, reshaping the watery urban stage, while outside the camera's frame we are drawn into an integrated folk dance for modern life.
