About the Grant

$18,000 to support Song Cycle (MAP 2010), composed by Vivian Fung, featuring texts from the minority regions of China and Southeast Asia.

About the Project

Vivian Fung will write a new song cycle for two vocalists and chamber ensemble, based on texts drawn from the stories and love poetry of the minority tribes of China and Southeast Asia. The new work will focus on the unique cultures and traditions of the Naxi, Mosuo, Miao, and other ethnic minorities of the mountains bordering China, Burma, Laos, and Thailand. Fung envisions the work as a mini-drama, with each text from a different region but arranged so that the two singers will form a dialogue.

The piece is scheduled to be world premiere at the Harris Theater for Music & Dance in Chicago, performed by Fulcrum Point New Music Project.
