About the Grant

$25,000 to support Music and Memory (MAP 2009), a new work composed by jazz trombonist, Wycliffe Gordon to premiere Fall of 2010 at the Gatehouse at Harlem Stage.

About the Project

Jazzmobile will support the development and presentation of Music and Memory composed by jazz trombonist, Wycliffe Gordon to premier Fall of 2010. The project is inspired by Within Our Gates, a film by Oscar Micheaux, one of the most prolific and innovative African American filmmakers of the early 20th Century. The project supports Gordon’s creative process and personal exploration of race and women’s rights (themes present in the film). Using the unique genre of silent film, transformed by a 21st century music score, Wycliffe will exam history’s role in clarifying and contextualizing the present.

Throughout our history, artists in the U.S. have utilized their skills as a vehicle to illuminate the human condition, contribute to the vitality of the broader aesthetic landscape, as well as to promote social change and democratic dialogue. Oscar Micheaux was no exception. With this project, Gordon picks up the baton (literally), seeking to interpret our past, define the present, and imagine the future. This project takes the bold leap of re-visioning and reinterpreting aspects of a pivotal work, while at the same time contributing to the expansion of the musical canon.
