About the Grant

$30,000 to support Secret Rendezvous (MAP 2009), a black comedy developed in dance-theatre style through the collaboration of Brooklyn-based ensemble The South Wing, led by Kameron Steele & Ivana Catanese, and the Yokohama-based performance art collective Nibroll, led by Mikuni Yanaihara & Keisuke Takahashi.

About the Project

The South Wing Theatre Company (TSW), led by director Kameron Steele and performer/writer Ivana Catanese, presents their new black comedy Secret Rendezvous — blending naturalistic and expressionist acting styles, a film-noir-inspired script and a fully interactive digital production design. Based on Kobo Abe's 1977 novel of the same name, the story follows the bizarrely erotic adventures of a man searching for his missing wife in a mysteriously vast underground hospital. As his search grows more desperate, the man himself gets lost, suspended between the desire to escape and the need to belong, drawn onward by women wanting to free him from his shell, or imprison him in a new one. The trysts, infidelities and secret rendezvous that ensue represent the human tendency to seek salvation through intimate connections made outside the structures of society and the banality of our everyday routines.

Developed in residency at HERE Arts Center, Secret Rendezvous features a collaboration between TSW and Yokohama-based art collective Nibroll, led by choreographer Mikuni Yanaihara and video artist Keisuke Takahashi. Takahashi’s playful avant-anime aesthetic and Yanaihara’s edgy brand of J-Pop dance intermingles with the austere minimalism and Suzuki-inspired acting style of TSW to create a bold new form. An “open-cube” set, conceived by Steele, facilitates this integration of eclectic styles via four large folding screens that morph the playing space in tandem with the narrative. As abstract and representational video underscore the man’s mental fluctuations projected onto the moving screens, the actors weave through the shifting playing space, infiltrating the man's conscience.
