About the Grant

$30,000 to support the McCarter Theatre in staging the world premiere of The Brother/Sister Plays (MAP 2008), an ambitious trilogy of plays (The Brothers Size, In the Red and Brown Water, and the world premiere of Marcus; or The Secret of Sweet) by Tarell Alvin McCraney.

About the Project

This momentous trilogy has never before been seen in its entirety.  Steeped in southern rhythms, inspired by Yoruban culture and seamed shut with the fire of urban music and dance, The Brother/Sister Plays are stunning modern-day tales of family and legacy. The unifying elements in all three plays are dizzyingly poetic language and the seamless weaving of the Orishas of West African and Caribbean Yoruba cosmology with simple and truthful tales of the human condition. The three plays can be seen either as a single work or three individual works, in any order, and will run in repertory over the course of two evenings of theater. All three plays will be performed by a single company of ten actors and will run from late April – mid June 2009.
