About the Grant

$30,000 to support The Detroit Symphony Orchestra commissioning pianist and composer Billy Childs to create a violin concerto for classical/jazz soloist and Detroit native, Regina Carter. Childs often works across musical genres and believes in bringing together different musical concepts, combining classical and jazz in his compositions. He sees this new work as an opportunity to bring different audiences together to appreciate music they might not otherwise experience.

About the Project

Furthering the DSO’s commitment to commissioning quality works of music and providing opportunities to link classical music with other genres, the project also entails a comprehensive outreach component involving both artists that reaches out to metro Detroit students and adults through community-based learning. The DSO is committed to promoting diversity in classical music and works to commission and present works by artists who are underrepresented in the field of orchestral music. The performance is part of the DSO’s Classical Roots celebration, a historic celebration of classical African-American composers that dates back to 1978.
