About the Grant

$30,000 to support Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble and SUNY Oswego's co-commission of composer Richard Einhorn to create a new multi-media choral work, THE ORIGIN (MAP 2007), inspired by the studies and struggles of Charles Darwin.

About the Project

In cooperation with SUNY Oswego’s ARTSwego presenting program and music department, Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble will co-commission composer Richard Einhorn to create THE ORIGIN, a new multi-media oratorio inspired by the studies and struggles of Charles Darwin. Scored for Kitka, symphony orchestra and chorus, and amplified instruments with original film by Bill Morrison, THE ORIGIN will premiere in Central New York just prior to the 200th anniversary of the scientist’s birth, and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species.

Dedicated to producing concerts, recordings, and educational programs that develop new audiences for music rooted in Eastern European women’s vocal traditions, Kitka also strives to expand the boundaries of this music as an expressive art form. Kitka’s mission is accomplished through a home season of concerts and vocal workshops; regional, national, and international touring programs; community service activities; in-school programs; broadcasts; recording and publication projects; master artist residencies; commissioning programs; and adventuresome collaborations.
