About the Grant

$35,000 to support Rigidigidim De Bamba De: Ruptured Calypso (MAP 2007), choreographer Cynthia Oliver's evening-length multidisciplinary dance theatre project on calypso and transnationalism.

About the Project

Rigidigidim De Bamba De: Ruptured Calypso is Cynthia Oliver's evening-length dance theatre project on calypso dancing and its translation as bodies move across geographical, cultural, and imaginary boundaries. Rigidigidim explores a notion of rupture or "the break" as a place where Caribbeans exist and where their bodies negotiate musical, ideological, and temporal dislocations. Rigidigidim is an experiment in disjuncture, in the sonic and visual landscapes of Caribbean realities and mythology. In Oliver's signature repeating, overlapping, non-linear style, Rigidigidim forces performers from the Caribbean diaspora to navigate their multiple national and regional identity formations through their voices, stories, and vibrant articulate bodies. Collaborators on Rigidigidim are design artist Benny Gomes, filmmaker Arthur Jafa, composer and sound designer Jason Fineklman, and dramaturg Aku Kadogo.
