About the Grant

$35,000 to support War Peace: Homeland (MAP 2006), a work of spoken word/musical theatre, created by choreographer Jason Samuels Smith and composer Dee Spencer, in collaboration with the ensemble of The Living Word Project.

About the Project

War Peace: Homeland is an investigation into the experience of urban teenagers as they are pulled into situations forced upon them by a nation at war. As politicians, network talking heads, corporate leaders, and self-appointed policy experts banter about the growing conflict in the Middle East it is the youth voice -the body that supplies the bodies- that is sorely missing from the public discourse. Youth Speaks/Living Word Project, and SF Jazz seek to address this issue in War Peace:Homeland, a youth driven hip-hop theater piece that is a deep at where urban youth find themselves right now.

Youth Speaks and SF Jazz will commission, produce, and present War Peace: Homeland for its World Premiere in San Francisco at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in late October, 2006.
