About the Grant

$30,000 to support Les écailles de la mémoire (The scales of memory) (MAP 2006), a new dance work created in collaboration between American choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Senegalese choreographer Germaine Acogny and their respective companies, the all-female Urban Bush Women and the all-male Compagnie JANT-BI.

About the Project

A unique performance experience, Les écailles de la mémoire (The scales of memory), gives audience members a lens through which to view the importance of landscapes and how we internalize them, speaking to the larger idea that "place" is a concept worthy of investigation.

Phase I, a three-week collaborative learning experience in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal, occurred in December 2005. A second creative residency will occur in summer 2007 in Tallahassee, Florida, and the third and final lab will be held again in Senegal in December 2007. The companies will continue to mine each others the movement vocabularies to discover fresh and relevant choreographic territory.

The initial encounter yielded many choreographic phrases and thematic agreement: nature, shared physical and emotional support, the contrast between rural and urban life, the similarities of cultures and the diversity of the African American and African experience.

Les écailles de la mémoire (The scales of memory) will premiere in the United States in January 2008.
