About the Grant

$20,000 to support Honey on the Halfcourt (MAP 2006), a new theater work written by Quiara Alegria Hudes in the tradition of Shange’s choreopoems, Laurie Carlos’ performance novels, and heightened Greek soliloquies, combining powerful writing with aggressive dramatic dance.

About the Project

In an abandoned lot in a forgotten corner of the city, an ambitious woman mixes some cement, fills in the cracks, and creates an outdoor basketball court. One-by-one, local girls trickle onto the court, some at midnight, others after school, to dribble, shoot, and forget their problems for a while. As they begin to play each other, the girls come out of their shells, expressing rage, loneliness, and growing pains through their midnight ball play. Finally, they have a group of five, a willing coach, and growing team unity. For some, ball play unleashes the unknown warrior within. For others, success on the court just brings into relief the painful circumstances of their lives. For all of them, it is a summer of intense bonds and challenges that pushes their bodies and spirits to unexpected extremes.

In the tradition of Shange’s choreopoems, Laurie Carlos’ performance novels, and heightened Greek soliloquies, Honey on the Halfcourt combines powerful writing with aggressive dramatic dance in a unique and dynamic way
