About the Grant

$20,000 to support Thousand Kites (MAP 2006), a community-based performance, web, and radio project centered on the United States prison system and created with prisoners, employees, and their families.

About the Project

Thousand Kites is a community-based performance, web, and radio project centered on the United States prison system and created with prisoners, employees, and their families. Material will be developed with prisoners at two Appalachian super-maximum security prisons, which will then be turned into scripts, installations, and broadcasts in the communities most affected by the criminal justice system. These events will take place at churches and community centers and on community radio stations near prisons from Sing-Sing in New York to Angola in Louisiana. Scripts and other items will be available for free to the general public through the group's website. Thousand Kites is a collaboration between Appalshop projects Holler to the Hood and Roadside Theater.
