About the Grant

$13,000 to support a new work (MAP 2005) by Akira Kasai that attempts to un-mask the raw emotion hidden behind molecular theory and scientific discovery.

About the Project

Butoh artist Akira Kasai’s Flowers explores how the power of science penetrates deeper and deeper into the sacred realm of human life. Utilizing his intensely athletic approach, blending butoh with traditional Japanese Dance, classical ballet, break-dancing and yoga, Kasai presents a universe where chaos, death and love are "like flowers blooming all over the sky." A highly personal solo performance piece, Flowers shifts radically between restraint and complete abandon.

Flowers premieres in the 2005 New York Butoh Festival.
