MAP Tech Chat Transcripts Jan 4th, 2010

ECW4: I have a question about uploading samples. I have tried to upload and have received an error and/or am not seeing the sample. They are jpg and the right size. Any suggestions?

Jay at MAP: Did you have any problems uploading your videos?

ECW4: Have not uploaded the videos yet. Am starting with the photos...

Jay at MAP: What is the error you are receiving?

ECW4: Last week, the error said: Warning: move_uploaded_file(/var/www/vhosts/apply.mapfund.org/media/materials/material_part_1_7812.jpg) [function.move-uploaded-file]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /var/www/vhosts/apply.mapfund.org/lib/fields.php on line 454

When I try this week, it doesn't seem to take once I find the file.

Jay at MAP: Investigating now... just one minute.

ECW4: Thanks! I just tried again. No error but when I hit "submit sample", the year, title and description save, but there is no file where I had chosen one to include.

Moira at MAP: The person who can answer your question isn't on this chat. So, wondering if you can email me the question, and I'll forward it to him?

ECW4: Sure. Will do. Thanks!

Pw: Who should we contact if we run into tech problems regarding the work samples? I don't expect any, but just in case...

Moira at MAP: mapinfo@mapfund.org, or denise@mapfund.org

melissa: For the clips hosted on Vimeo - do they need to be labeled a particular way or is providing you with the link enough?  (It's already has the name of the excerpt and the company name)

Moira at MAP: The link is enough.

saira: If we are a dance company collaborating on a future project with a 'guest' choreographer, what is the best way to submit work samples? A sample from our company and one from the choreographer, labeled as such?

Moira at MAP: Exactly so.

Streetpic: I actually had a quick question about the letter of intent from the other lead artists.  Just wanted a little more information about what you would like in the artist statement from the other lead artists - what their interest/role in the project - anything else in particular??

Moira at MAP: The most important aspect of the artist statement is a clear commitment to the proposed project.  Other than that, it's always nice to hear from the personal perspective of the artists why this particular avenue of inquiry is urgent to her/him.

Ivy: I'm curious about what percentage of the budget our request should be.

Kelly at MAP: About 30-35%.

Ivy: Thanks. Also, I originally applied with two other lead artists listed in my proposal but am feeling like I should perhaps be the only one. I am a choreographer and had listed my visual artist and composer as lead artists. They are probably considered more as designers for hire yes?

Kelly at MAP:  My initial thought is that they should stay on - it gives the panelists a fuller picture of the collaborative team for the work. Will they be involved in the development of the work?

Ivy: I will be working collaboratively with them through the whole project but not as much as say, the dancers.

Kelly at MAP: Ok. I think that those artists should stay on the application.

Nolaas: First, thanks very much for this opportunity to chat.  Next, I have two questions.  1) If the files are Mp4 already, are the automatically H.264 or do I have to down load HandBreak and convert? And 2) The guidelines say "add the work in progress sample last" yet the artist pull down menu only has options for the three artists, so add the work in progress sample with the 3rd artist?

Jay at MAP: If vimeo/youtube accepts your mp4, it should be fine. Do you know the resolution of the file?  Most likely your mp4 was encoded as H.264.

Nolaas: We used Mini-dvs to shoot, adobe to edit then converted to Quicktime (we ususally upload to Youtube w/Quicktime) I am not at that computer now to check resolution; I will check it later.

Jay at MAP: Converting to quicktime will encode with H.264 and produce either a .mov or a .mp4 file--both are okay.

Nolaas: Great--Thanks Jay.

Moira at MAP:  To answer your second question, Nolaas, yes, just assign the work in progress sample to any one of the artists. If you indicate it's a work in progress, it will allow for 3 samples for that artist. Does that make sense?

Nolaas: Yes it makes sense about the work samples, just label "work in progress" and upload 3 samples for the third artist--Thanks much!
