You are now in chat room “mapfund.”
mapentry (3:51:10 PM): MAP Chat December 12th, 2007
mapkellyc (4:01:48 PM): Thanks for joining us! Do you have any questions?
Penn (4:09:57 PM): When MAP specifies that it is only interested in projects that include a live performance, must this be a fully-realized production to be considered, or is the culmination in a public reading of a new work acceptable?
mapkellyc (4:10:48 PM): No it does not have to be a fully realized project. We will fund all work up to and including the premiere...so that includes development, workshop presentations, etc.
Victor (4:11:53 PM): Our orchestra and conductor will apply together as one of the artists. Can I send one combined bio?
mapkellyc (4:12:35 PM):: Yes, that would be fine. You’ll want to use the ensemble format when entering artist information.
2write (4:13:50 PM): We applied last round for a commissioned piece with 2 playwrights. We did not select the 2nd playwright until after the application was submitted. We would like to re-apply (we were not funded that round). Is that okay?
mapkellyc (4:14:19 PM): Yes.
Victor (4:15:25 PM): Just to confirm, we need to both upload the work samples online and also mail two copies along with the cover sheet?
mapkellyc (4:16:20 PM): You'll need to enter some information about the work sample on-line (and upload only if you are including a script) and then mail to us 2 copies of each sample. The only samples we are accepting this year as an upload is a script. Once you upload the script you do not have to send an additional copy of it through the mail.
Penn (4:23:19 PM): Does MAP fund season-long artistic development efforts (a whole series of developmental readings, rather than just one of those readings)?
mapkellyc (4:23:49 PM): No, we do not at this time.
VictorRacelis (4:24:15 PM): Under expenses can we also include new media/web promotion in addition to standard publicity?
mapkellyc (4:24:27 PM): Yes, you can.
Victor (4:30:00 PM): Will there be any future online chats, or is this the last one for the Feb. 1 deadline?
mapkellyc (4:30:31 PM): There will be two more chats - January 9th, 2008 and January 23rd, 2008.
Penn (4:30:23 PM): If a developing project will not culminate in a fully realized production until after the grant period, is this project still eligible?
mapkellyc (4:30:44 PM): Yes, however if you were to receive a grant, you could only use the funds on activities during the grant period.
Thtr (4:32:28 PM): In your guidelines, you state, "MAP is especially interested in providing support to work early in its development." Would it be okay to submit this year for a project going up in 2009, that will be heavily workshopped in 08?
mapkellyc (4:33:36 PM): Yes. Especially since this grant will cover activities Sept. 1, 2008 - August 31, 2010. Even if it your project was premiering in 2010 - you could apply this year for the development and next year for the premiere production.
Thtr (4:40:30): In general, is MAP more inclined to fund a project that already has some secured funding, or does that make it less desirable?
mapkellyc (4:40:36 PM): Having secured funding can help, yes. It's not a requirement though. MAP cannot fund a project in its entirety, so your budget should reflect other sources (pending or confirmed).
year (4:42:42 PM): In your guidelines it states that an organization apply for more than one project if the artistic personnel are separate. Does that mean everyone including performers and designers?
mapkellyc (4:44:03 PM): It means the generative artists on the project must be different. So if the performers and designers are work-for-hire artists, then they do no have to be different.
Penn (4:45:40 PM): Our theatre has a full season of developmental readings - in selecting among the upcoming works in progress, would MAP be more inclined to fund a drama, musical, or have some other inclination toward a particular style or genre
mapkellyc (4:47:11 PM): No not really...all of those would be fine. In choosing, I would look carefully at each and be sure that you are able to make a strong case for innovation (in form or content).
Victor (4:57:37 PM): I thought of one other question. If funded, are there any final reporting requirements?
mapkellyc (4:58:23 PM): Yes there are. We ask for a copy of both your original and final budgets and a project narrative.
jack (4:58:48 PM): If the project is quite expensive-- around $300,00O- and most of it is covered in-kind, or with other grants, do you think it is possible to be funded to your max, instead of around half of that?
mapkellyc (4:59:11 PM): Yes, it is possible.
Schein (5:05:00 PM): If an artist is creating a new work, but it is based on an existing epic and performed in the traditional context is that considered a new work?
mapkellyc (5:05:37 PM): It would be a new work, but I think it might be hard to make an argument for innovation, which MAP requires.
jack (5:14:32 PM): How do you think that the MAP grant has changed with Creative Capital? or has it changed?
mapkellyc (5:15:45 PM): I think it has changed a bit. We've folded in some concepts from Creative Capital, such as offering the Professional Development Program to grantees, following the development of projects more closely, more direct feedback about declined proposals, more outreach, etc. We are also looking at ways to help promote projects on the web.
jack (5:27:10 PM): One more question-- if some of our performers have been on a successful MAP grant- will that hinder us with our grant where they are also performers?
mapkellyc (5:28:01 PM): No, i don't think so.
